EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

Throughout my own education, my music teachers have all had very different ways of teaching music. When I become an instructor, my philosophy will be to use music as a tool to instill maturity and work ethic in my students. To carry out this philosophy, my curriculum will include major ensembles, such as Marching Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Band, along with a music theory class. I will instruct my students on musical subjects, but also talk about values such as work ethic and responsibility. In addition, I will assess my students on their primary instruments in order to encourage practicing and self discipline. Lastly, I will evaluate my students for the semester based on attendance, formal assessments, and behavior. I would also carry these same values of maturity and work ethic to my private lesson instruction in addition to teaching the instrument, because good character helps make a musician employable.

When I become a music teacher, my curriculum will include major ensembles at the beginning and advanced level, and a music theory class in order to teach accountability, team work, and timeliness. Because music is so influential, it is important that a music curriculum instills good values in students. Thus, my program will involve a beginning and advanced concert band, marching band, jazz band, and orchestra. Ensembles give students the chance to play great music, but they also have to work hard and together in order to learn an instrument and have one ensemble sound. Also, ensembles teach accountability as students have to show up for rehearsal on time and learn their music.  I also believe that a music theory class is important, because it helps students understand the music they are playing and how their part fits into the ensemble.
